Answer by Cacaosuyo: What do you know about the farmers?

What do you know about the farmers who produce the cacao for your chocolate?

As chocolate-sellers there are a few things we rather do than selling chocolate. Of course, eating chocolate would be one of them. But also: learn about the world of chocolate & teach people about how it works. That’s why we let customers ask questions, questions we send to the makers of the chocolates we sell.

The first question we got was by Paul’s mother, a fan of milkchocolate interested in the ethical side of chocolate and cacao. Do you also have a question for the chocolate makers? Contact us!

This blog is also available in dutch.

We have send this question to the makers of the chocolates we sell. And received a lot of answers.

The answer of Cacaosuyo from Peru

cacaosuyo peru
We know all of them, we know their names, we know their wives, how many children they have and what they do now, we know how they live, how many hectares of cocoa and other crops have, we know they are part of cooperatives or if they can sell their cocoa freely, in general we visit and talk with them regularly, there is a friendship between us and for that they open the doors of their farms and allow us to have access throughout the year to help them to take care of their cocoa farms by providing technical assistance.

That friendship that join with them helps us know their thoughts, their vision of the future, what they look for their children, the problems they have and all this makes us realize how sustainable it will be in time to keep cocoa crops they have. In general, they seek to keep winning more by selling their cocoa and we teach them postharvest techniques (fermentation and drying) to thus give added value to their beans so they can sell directly to chocolate manufacturers in the world.

Cocoa farmers are a little disappointed to work with associations or cooperatives and Fair Trade certification because finally the plus this should generate them economically never reaches them, it is for this reason that Cacaosuyo look to create a family with farmers teaching them to give added value to their cocoa and paying them directly for cocoa they sell us, only in this way we are ensuring that farmers earn effectively more and believe that only in this way farmers are interested in maintaining their cacao trees and not replace them with other crops that could be more profitable.

Eduardo”
