The answer of Madécasse from Madagaskar
“Dear Paul,
Thanks for taking the initiative to educate consumers.
At Madécasse, we have a close relationship with our cocoa farming partners. We collaborate with three different groups of farmers. One is a family farm, one is a cooperative and one group consists of 3 villages that sell their cocoa to a central point. In all cases, the farmers receive about 30% above the international fair trade price plus the fair trade premium for social projects.
In addition to the fair trade premium projects, we work with one of our retail partners and the farmers to improve livelihoods. Please see this blog from the Whole Planet Foundation for details of our first collaboration to build 9 wells and repair a school. We followed up this year by building additional wells and repairing another school.
